Tree anchors consist of a blanket that goes over the root ball and connects to several stakes and ties. Once the ties are tensioned, the blanket holds the root ball firmly in place.

One example of industrial-strength tree anchors are duckbill earth anchors, which use a toggle principle to work. Duckbill earth anchors are driven to the desired depth in the soil with a hammer and drive steel, and then a wire rope is attached to the anchor and pulled up to set the duckbill anchor into a perpendicular position. Bigger anchors for larger trees may require the use of a hydraulic or manual winch, jack or a post puller.

Another brand of tree anchor systems is ArborTie products, which include equipment for large and small trees. The ArborTie products include webbing that is approximately ¾ inches wide with strength of over 900lbs through tension. This webbing is designed to protect the bark and the stakes are made from steel for use even in rocky soils. ArborTie also sells individual tree anchor components, such as webbing that will work with any anchoring system or individual anchors. The ArborTie earth anchors are reusable and can be installed without drive rods. The ArborTie earth anchors are helical, also called steel eye, and are about 30 inches in length.

One other important format when it comes to providing tree support is called tree guying. This process keeps the root ball firmly in position until the roots grow enough to hold the root ball in place on their own.

According to an article by Colorado State University, there are two proper methods to tree guying:

Nylon Strap – For this method, wide nylon straps are recommended, attached to tree guys positioned within 18 inches of the ground. The trunk should still be able to move several inches in any direction and the stakes should be set in a parallel position in the direction of the wind. This system should be left in place no more than one year, after which the posts should be removed from the ground to help prevent damage to the roots.

Dowel Method – This method involves driving two or three wood dowels down through the root ball and into the soil below. Such a method stabilizes the root ball and holds it into place as needed to support the tree.

It may seem pretty severe to hear something like this, but without the proper rigging supplies someone could lose their limb or even worse, their life. • Turnbuckles: using several different sized turnbuckles for one job is not unusual, they are used for causing tension or loosening either chain or wire ropes.

• Pulling grips: in most cases when you are looking for a grip they are sold in sets of pulling grips ranging from 4 to 5 different sizes. These are galvanized and used to lead electrical, data, or communication cables through conduit at a low tension.

• Swivels: when using swivels they are generally used to save time within the job. They are able to swivel 360 degrees and are used to loosen or adjust a load in a certain direction without unhooking or halting the job.

• Wire Rope Fittings: these are often called wire rope clips as well, but whatever you call them, wire rope fittings are secured to the load to hold the metal wires into place.

• Repair Links: any site is going to want to have a plentiful amount of Repair Links available and on site. These are basically one link to a chain that is not sealed so that they can replace a broken link. They are made from carbon or stainless steel and alloy.


It may sound like a lot of things to double check all of these rigging supplies on any job site, but imagine how many times they have to be checked, double checked, and even triple checked before a job can begin. Wire rope with names such as aircraft cable has many uses. This is a type of rope with wire laid around a core to make strands. Two types of wire rope that is available on the market are called improved plow steel and extra improved slow steel. This rope is typically shipped from the manufacturer and wound around a reel. Unwinding stainless steel wire rope from a reel should not be done unless the the reel is stationary. Place the reel over a pipe or another fixed object before you begin unwinding the wire. Make sure you identify the lay of the wire when it is wound back on the reel. Make certain that you do not accidentally drop the reel of wire on the ground as this will cause the wire to get damaged.

When you receive a reel of wire from the manufacturer it will need to be examined. You will need to verify that it is the correct type of rope and that it is not damaged. When a reel of wire is stored, it needs to be kept away from moisture, heat and any corrosive compounds. If the reel is to be kept out in the elements, if should be stored under a cover and up off of the ground. You should put a lubricating oil over the wire to protect it from corroding.
